Reports: Manchester United set to offer David De Gea a new contract

David De Gea stays at Old Trafford for another season

Manchester United has confirmed to make one last attempt to renew David De Gea’s contract – hoping they can keep hold of their number one goalkeeper at Old Trafford, reports Mirror. After the collapse in the Real Madrid deal at the eleventh hour, De Gea is now thinking of committing his future to the Red Devils.

The 24-year-old’s dream move to the Spanish giants took a dramatic twist in the last hours of the deadline day - forcing him to remain a Manchester United player till his contract expires in the next 12 months.

It is believed that the 20-time Champions are to offer the Spanish goalkeeper a new deal in October, more than what Real Madrid were considering to pay him. If De Gea still longs to make his dream move to Real Madrid, he can tie the knot by signing a pre-contract with the Los Blancos side as he is in the final year of his current deal.

De Gea had an outstanding season for the Red Devils last term and was offered a new deal of £200,000-a week which he turned down. Real are now set to offer him a signing-on fee of £12 million next summer. He has been demoted to the bench this campaign with Sergio Romero being preferred in goal by manager van Gaal ahead of the Spaniard. The 24-year-old is now with the national squad in Madrid ahead of their preparation for Euro 2016 qualifiers.

De Gea calm as ever

Despite the collapse in his possible move to Real Madrid, De Gea has said he has the strength of character to move on from the episode. Juan Mata, his current teammate at Old Trafford believes De Gea will not sulk and can still play a big part in United’s squad this season.

“He seems the same as ever to me," said Mata.

"He's calm, relaxed. He has a naturally calm personality. These have been difficult days, but he is okay. It's good for him to be here with the national team, too. I think his personality will help. He is always calm.”

"Even in moments of maximum pressure or stress, he still plays well. His personality will help him on and off the pitch. David is professional and he always will be. His desire and professionalism will remain intact. Any team in the world would be better off with him in it. The fans always support the team, all of us, and they will support him.”

"He is a friend and he is very professional. I wish him the best and I am sure he will be fine. He will manage the situation."

Meanwhile, Spain coach Vincente Del Bosque has hinted that it will be difficult to include De Gea in the Spanish squad for Euro 2016 next summer if he is not given enough game time at Old Trafford. La Roja will face Slovenia this Saturday in their European qualifiers fixture as they will look to maintain their top spot in Group C.
