Mesut Ozil: "I don't have to prove anything, I am criticised more"

Mesut Ozil expresses his discontent with the constant criticism directed towards him.

Moving to a new league altogether could be a bit difficult for any player, and Mesut Ozil wasn’t an exception. But, a season later now, he insists that he is still an easy target for critics and pundits.

Following his move last season from Real Madrid, Ozil had been constantly subject to massive criticism, but admits that he has nothing to prove.

Speaking to German news agency DPA, the midfielder was quoted by the Guardian saying, “I don’t play to prove anything to anybody, I play for Arsenal. I have the feeling that I am criticised more, that happened to me in the Bundesliga and also at Real Madrid.”

“We have only just started the season [at Arsenal], we have new players in key positions. The collective game, which is something I have a lot to do with, cannot then just work well from one day to the next,” he continues.

“10 weeks ago I was elected to the team of the season in England. I was world champion then. It was the summer break and after a few games [of the new season] everything is called into question again. This is strange, but I know what I can offer.”

Earlier, Arsenal had ended their winless run with an emphatic 3-0 win at Villa Park with Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck scoring their first goals of the season for the club. Arsenal were off to a sensational start, scoring 3 goals in 4 minutes to seal a winning advantage over Aston Villa.
