Diego Costa’s fitness has been a major concern for boss Jose Mourinho who now faces a tough task as the Brazil-born Spanish striker has been ruled out of Chelsea’s trip to Manchester United next weekend.

The 26-year-old was involved during Spain’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Luxemborg despite Chelsea’s concern over his fitness. When asked about Costa’s condition, Mourinho said, “I have no idea. The only thing I can say is that, after the Arsenal game, he went to the national team. He played two big matches against Slovakia and Luxembourg, and he came back in conditions where he’s not available to play for his club.”

Costa will already be missing the Blues’ Champions League tie against Maribor. Mourinho expressed his disappointment with the situation however refraining from making any comments towards Spain manager Vincente del Bosque.

“For what? For what?” he said. “To spend money on phone calls? No. I think Diego will be in great conditions again in mid-November, to be back for the national team. That is for sure. Our medical department will take good care of him and he will be in perfect condition. He will play for me when he has free time from the national team.”

Since his move from Atletico de Madrid in the summer transfer window, Costa has already bagged nine goals from seven appearances.
