Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Debjit Majumdar believes it is imperative that the Kolkata club win the Calcutta Football League calling it the club’s “first target”. Bagan haven’t won the CFL since 2009 as a result of which city rivals East Bengal have made up a lead over them in the total wins with the latter having won 36 against Bagan’s 29.

Majumdar also told Bagan’s in-house media officials that the team also wanted to retain the I-League put up a good show in the AFC Cup. He said, “Since Mohun Bagan has not won the Calcutta Football League for quite sometime now, our first target will be to win this tournament.”

“Also, our aim will be to retain the I-League and perform to our potential in the AFC Cup. After playing for Mohun Bagan in the CFL, I will focus on the Indian Super League, but right now, my full concentration will be on the Calcutta Football League Premier Division.”

This can happen only in Kolkata: Debjit Majumdar

Majumdar, who was voted as the best goalkeeper of the I-League, for his exceptional performances throughout the campaign that saw him keep seven clean sheets in 14 matches with three man-of-the-match awards as well was “overwhelmed” by the reception the team received following their maiden I-League success.

“This can happen only in Kolkata. I was overwhelmed to see such reception at the Airport. We all knew that there will be a lot of supporters who will greet us at the airport, but truly speaking never expected such response from the fans,” the 25-year-old was quoted saying by Mohun Bagan.

When asked about which match was the best one of the season for him personally he replied, “The 2nd leg Kolkata derby of the Hero I-League in which we emerged winners by a solitary goal. I made 4-5 good saves in that game, which gave me a lot of satisfaction. I got the Man of the Match in this game.”

He was then asked to pick the best player and in Bagan’s successful campaign he picked Sony Norde, Katsumi Yusa and Sehnaj Singh while Pritam Kotal was the lone winner of the best young player in Majumdar’s eyes.
