Paul Scholes still backs David Moyes

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has said that Manchester United never looked like getting anything out of the derby last night against Manchester City even when they were only 1-0 down.

The 39-year old was critical of the team’s performance and said : “When I was playing, we could be two or three down but we never felt we were beaten. Tonight I never thought we’d get back in it, even at 1-0 down.”

Scholes, however, did suggest that Manchester United boss David Moyes must be given time and proper financial backing in this summer’s transfer window.

“You have to stand by him. He’s made a couple of signings that haven’t quite worked out yet and in the summer he’s going to need backing – there’s no doubt about it. Was he backed as well as he could have been last summer? I’m not too sure,” Scholes said.

“It looks to me like there are a few areas that need addressing. Centre midfield you could say they’ve been looking at that for a few years and haven’t quite find the answer. Defensively, with Vidic going, it looks like Rio and maybe Evra’s going that’s three of your back for gone.

“I think going forward we’re alright. The quality of Van Persie, Rooney and Mata in his right position I think we’re alright up there it’s just midfield and defence where he needs to look.”

Gary Neville, another former Manchester United player who is now working with Sky Sports, was more scathing in his assessment of the team.

Neville said : “They need to have a rethink about where they are going. There is no pace and power going forward. At the moment they have an identity crisis.”
