Perth Glory pull off major coup in signing former Arsenal and Spurs star William Gallas

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea - Premier League

Former Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur defender, William Gallas, has agreed to join Australian A-league side Perth Glory, according to reports from ESPN FC.

The 36-year-old Frenchman is set to arrive in Australia sometime in the first week of November to pen a one-year deal with the club.

The veteran defender will bring a huge wealth of experience to the A-league side having played at the highest level for a whole host of clubs that include Olympique Marseille, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs. There were also reports that Melbourne Victory were in for the Frenchman, but it was finally revealed that he is now on his way to Perth.

Gallas will officially become a Perth player, subject to a medical, and will be their international marquee star. The defender was in confident mood ahead of his move to Australia.

“After speaking to Alistair Edwards and Jason Brewer, the passion and ambition in the voices of both gentlemen enticed me to this new challenge in Australia,” he said. “I look forward to wearing with pride the Jersey of Perth Glory for this season.

“I hope to help my new team mates and club achieve success in this season and hope to help deliver to the fans of Perth the championship they are looking for. I look forward to this new challenge and hope to excite the fans,”

Gallas’ agent meanwhile confirmed that the experienced centre-back had received plenty of offers from clubs in The Gulf, Far East and Major League Soccer, but chose Perth as theys showed the most committment.

“This is a credit to the A-league on how far it’s come since its inaugural season and the profile of a club such as Perth Glory and the people behind the scenes that make this a great club,” his agent Pierre Frelot said.

“I would like to thank the club on the professionalism it has shown throughout discussions with myself and my representatives and the people who made it happen in Australia.”

Gallas last played for Tottenham Hotspur between 2010 and 2013. He was released by the club this summer on June 7, 2013, after which he became a free agent.
