Many Spanish national team fans took the opportunity of Spain's friendly against Costa Rica to boo Barcelona defender Gerard Pique for his comments on Cristiano Ronaldo's birthday party.

The Barcelona defender had taken a dig at Real Madrid's poor season during Barcelona’s treble celebrations by mocking Cristiano Ronaldo for hosting his birthday party after their 4-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The Spain supporters jeered Pique initially at Spain's training session and also hooted and booed during the match when he replaced Sergio Ramos. The supporters made it a difficult night for the Barcelona man as all his touches on the ball were greeted with whistles.

Pique however, said that the fans reactions is not going to affect his performance as Spain gets ready for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Belarus. "Everyone can express themselves freely. One day they whistle, one day they applaud," he said.

Pique went on to suggest that he is used to such a response from the fans. "It has gone on for years, it doesn't bother me. This is my job. For me, coming to the national team is like coming home. I have a lot of caps and, every time they call me, I'll come," Pique said.

Spain's coach Vicente del Bosque defended Pique and said that the fans should not whistle at their own players. "I think that, if you whistle a Spanish player, you are effectively whistling the national team," del Bosque said.

"Let's not forget that most of these lads have represented their country 70 times at least, they have come up through the youth teams and have always behaved correctly; it's not right to whistle them."
