Added pressure on Manchester United to perform as conditions of Adidas deal revealed

Manchester United take the field in last week’s International Champions Cup

Manchester United’s share prospectus put up on the New York Stock Exchange has revealed conditions of the club’s new deal with Adidas, details which show how thin a line the club must tread in the upcoming few seasons to remain in business as a top football club.

The £750m kit deal with the German sportswear company is a record, but there will be very little margin of failure if United are to hold on to this record deal. The deal will be cut by 30% if the Red Devils fail to qualify for the Champions League in consecutive seasons from 2015-16. The contract will also be cancelled in the unlikely event of relegation from the Premier League.

However, United could benefit from an extra £4m per year if they win any of the Premier League, Champions League or FA Cup titles.

Manchester United failed to qualify for any of the European competitions this season after finishing seventh in 2013-14, but the mood at Old Trafford is buoyant following recent events. Over the last week or so, United have thrashed LA Galaxy 7-0, beat Italian powerhouse AS Roma by 3-2 and played out a goalless draw with Inter Milan.

The details thrown up by the share prospectus is likely to put added pressure on the team though, whose standing with their worldwide fan base is on as thin ice as it is with Adidas.
