UEFA Champions League 2016/17: Real Madrid to be fined for security deficiency against Sporting Lisbon

Real Madrid and six Sporting Lisbon fans will be fined by the Spanish anti-violence commission

Spanish giants, Real Madrid will be fined after a lapse in security was noticed in their UEFA Champions League game against Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in Santiago Bernabeu earlier this month.

The anti-violence commission had yesterday proposed to fine the Madrid-based club a sum of €3,001 for their lack of measures to control the supporters in the UEFA Champions League group stage match.

The commission will also take suitable actions against six of the visiting fans in the Santiago Bernabeu, home of Real Madrid.

According to the Superior Sports Council (CSD), the fine will be charged against the Spanish club for barring flares from being lit in the match on September 14. However, the council also told that the remaining parts of the sanction are aimed towards the fans of the Lisbon-based club.

The charges against the Portuguese fans include lighting a flare in the stadium and another outside the stadium, in the streets and throwing a glass of beer towards a security guard which was described as, “with clear signs of intoxication”.

The clash between the Spanish and the Portuguese giants ended in a 2-1 win for the hosts. The game was full of positives for the Los Blancos, as hitman Cristiano Ronaldo and summer arrival Alvaro Morata both scored to secure three points for the club.

However, several pundits applauded Lisbon’s performance in the first half.

Gelson Martins impressed in the game

Gelson Martins, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder in the Lisbon team, was impressive and set up the only goal for the visitors.

Reports suggest that Zinedine Zidane was impressed by the young midfielder and is eyeing a move for the Cape Verde-born footballer.

Atletico Madrid’s games deemed high-risk fixture

The Spanish anti-violence commission has been active lately. Earlier this week, the Atletico Madrid vs Bayern Munich match at Vincente Calderon was declared as a ‘high-risk fixture’ by the Spanish body.

Last Sunday, the commission also declared Atletico’s league clash against Deportivo as a high-risk fixture, as per Spanish media outlet Efe.
