Keylor Navas admits he cried when his move to Manchester United broke down

Keylor Navas has not conceded in all four appearances for Real Madrid in La Liga

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas has revealed the emotional strain he went through following the breakdown of his transfer to Manchester United and David De Gea’s move to the Spanish capital, Goal reports. The Spanish giants were almost on the verge of signing their long-term target De Gea and his pending arrival at the Bernabeu only meant one thing for the Costa Rican keeper – his exit from the Los Blancos side.

The two clubs had agreed on a player plus cash swap deal in the late stages of the transfer window. Keylor Navas was due to board a plane to Manchester to finalise a move to Old Trafford, with De Gea heading the other way. But unfortunately, the deal collapsed due to a breakdown in communications between two clubs with Madrid unable to sign De Gea before the transfer deadline.

Both clubs issued contrasting statements, blaming one another for the failure to complete the transfer over the following days of the transfer window deadline. As it stands both players remain at their own respective clubs. Meanwhile, Real Madrid’s pursuit of signing De Gea in the next summer transfer window was given a huge blow when the Spanish goalkeeper signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford two weeks ago.

The Costa Rican goalkeeper Keylor Navas has revealed that he cried as he was close to boarding the flight on radio station Cadena Cope.

Speaking about deadline day, Navas said: "Was one of the worst days of my football career. I cried near my wife when the transfer window was closed. I'm human and everything exploded. I was waiting in the airport even without suitcases. I was not on the plane, but I was near.”

I didn’t want to leave Madrid: Keylor Navas

The 28-year-old has also admitted that he planned on staying at the Santiago Bernabeu and had no intention of leaving the club. However, he has revealed that he felt hurt when Real Madrid was prepared to sign a goalkeeper to replace him.

“It was a complicated situation,” he added. “I wanted to play, and to watch how others [De Gea] play above me is difficult to interpret. At 19:00 CET my agent says [to] me 'you have to take a plane' and I was waiting in a room.

“The contract arrived too late. My agent reviewed it and was correct. I didn't want to go. I did the medicals in Valdebebas after that and I did not return to the airport.”

“There was no time. Then I went home. It was complicated. I arrived at home and I started to cry.”

Navas set to enter the history books

The Real Madrid player Keylor Navas is on the verge of breaking the 370-minute clean sheet streak of the Spanish team. The 28-year-old is just 10 minutes away from breaking former club captain Iker Casillas’ record and he could well be achieving that on Wednesday against Atheltic Bilbao.

“When I was a kid my dream was to be here, I am pleased to be part of Real Madrid's history. Hard work has rewards and is the path that leads us to achieve great things,” said Navas.

Former Real Madrid keeper Miguel Angel, who didn’t concede in any of his first four league appearances in 1975/76, is the only other member of this hall of fame.
