After Luka Modric underwent an MRI scan to determine the situation of his injury, Real Madrid released a medical report on their website confirming that the Croatian had suffered damage to a tendon on his left leg and will now out of action for two to three months.
The report read: “Ater the imagining tests carried out by the Real Madrid Sanitas Medical Service on Luka Modric, a tear of the left proximal rectus femoris tendon has been found. Pending a medical evaluation.”
Even though the duration of his complete rivalry was not announced by the Real Madrid doctors, he is expected to be out of at least two to three months, missing up to 20 matches for Real Madrid in the process.
Modric had suffered the injury while playing for Croatia during their European qualifier against Italy, and was taken off in the first half. “I felt a very strong pain in the upper part of my thigh. It still hurts. It is a shame, but football is like that,” said Modric following the match.
Looking at the number of matches he will miss, it is safe to say that he should be fit enough to return back to full fitness for the Champions League knockout stages. He will, however, miss World Club Championship which is scheduled for December.
The 29-year-old, who touched down in Madrid on Sunday from Milan for his medical evaluation, is undoubtedly the best midfielder in the world at the moment, and his injury will surely come as a big blow for Real Madrid who are currently on top of the table.
Modric’s unavailability will now mean that head coach Carlo Ancelotti will now have to fill a big hole that is left in the Madrid midfield, and this is perhaps Sami Khedira’s moment to shine, who has been out of the starting berth for quite a while now.
Both Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho have been reported to be interested in bringing the World Cup winner to their respective clubs in the next window when he will be a free agent after his current contract expires.
Things can, however, change now with Modric’s unavailability coming into the picture as Ancelotti would want to keep him since the other central midfielder in the team, Asier Illarramendi lacks the experience needed to fill in his boots.
