Real Madrid on course to break the world record for most consecutive wins

Cristiano Ronaldo equalled Raul and is now joint 2nd on the leading goalscorers in Champions League history

While Liverpool was knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night, Real Madrid’s juggernaut in the competition continued as they registered a 4-0 win over Ludogorets at the Santiago Bernabeu. Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Arbeloa and Medran each scored a goal apiece as the Los Blancos became the first side in the history of the Champions League to enter into the Round of 16 winning all 6 six games in the group stage twice. The club had first achieved the feat in the 2011-12 season.

The win on Tuesday night was Madrid’s 19th consecutive win across all competitions breaking the previous Spanish record held by Barcelona. They now have a great chance to go past the overall record of 24 wins, held by Brazilian side Coritiba achieved between February and May 2011.

A look at Madrid’s next five fixtures indicates that if they continue to be as dominant as they have been so far, they could overtake Coritiba for the team with most successive wins.

Madrid’s next game is an away fixture at Almeria, a side that is on the 17th position in the La Liga standings. Following that they have 2 Club World cup matches in Morroco, then they face Valencia away and then they play defending La Liga champions Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Ray at the Calderon.

Ronaldo finally overtakes Raul’s Champions League tally

Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Ludergorets also helped him to go past Raul’s tally for the most number of goals scored in the Champions League. The goal was also the Portuguese's 5th goal in 6 games so far and took his tally to 33 goals across all competitions this season. He is now behind Lionel Messi who has 74 goals.

These are exciting times for Madrid and manager Carlo Ancelotti heaped praises on the team, calling them am extraordinary group.

“I have an extraordinary group (of players) and I never tire of saying it.

I could not imagine winning 19 games in a row after the defeat to Atletico. I knew we would fix what had not gone well but not in this way,” Ancelotti said after the win last night.
