Rumour: Manchester United make a move for Arsenal's Thomas Vermaelen

Manchester United could be about to make a move for important Gunners star Thomas Vermaelen who is set to leave Arsenal.

Vermaelen, 28, has been with Arsenal since 2009 but recently the form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have left the Belgian defender on the side lines.

Sky Sports have reported that they understand that Manchester United have “made a move” for Vermaelen with the former Premier League champions rumoured to be ahead of the likes of Fiorentina in the race to bring the centre-back in.

The defender can also play at left-back and at the moment he is preparing with his country for their opening group match against Algeria on Tuesday. Furthermore, the centre-back has completed 91% of his passes.

This could be the second departure for Arsenal in a week with right-back Bacary Sagna confirming that he will leave the club at the end of his contract and join champions Manchester City.

Between them the pair have over 400 appearances for Arsenal and the loss of players of their experience could prove costly for Arsenal next season unless the Gunners replace them well.
