Reports: Tottenham to to make late bid for Manchester City’s Alvaro Negredo

Alvaro Negredo joined Manchester City last summer from Sevilla

Tottenham are set to enter the race to sign Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo, according to the Daily Star.

Spurs will face competition for Negredo’s signature from Atletico Madrid, who are reportedly targeting the Spaniard as a replacement for Diego Costa, who completed his move to Chelsea yesterday.

New manager Mauricio Pochettino isn’t fully convinced by either Emmanuel Adebayor or Roberto Soldado, and wants to add a quality striker this summer. Pochettino has doubts about Adebayor’s ability to produce his best form on a consistent basis, while he wants to see Soldado in action himself before deciding on his future.

Soldado arrived from Valencia with a big price tag, but was a disappointment in his first year at White Hart Lane, only scoring six goals in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old only joined Man City from Sevilla last summer, and he started very impressively before fading in the second half of the season. He scored nine goals in the Premier League, and 23 in all comptetions.

City have an abundance of excellent strikers, with Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, and Stefan Jovetic also at the club, and Negredo only started 21 league games last season. If Aguero hadn’t missed large spells with injury, that number would almost certainly have fallen.

Negredo has scored 10 goals in 21 appearances for Spain, but he was left out of Vicente del Bosque’s 23-man squad for the World Cup this summer.
