Rio Ferdinand set to sign Queens Park Rangers: Harry Redknapp

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is set to join Premier League newcomers Queens Park Rangers, as Harry Redknapp looks to strengthen his squad ahead of another gruelling campaign.

The R’s got promoted from the Championship at the first time of asking after relegation from the Premier League the previous season. With Redknapp keen to learn from previous mistakes, he is already planning on Ferdinand coming in to bolster his defence.

Ferdinand left Old Trafford at the end of last season and is prepared to take a significant pay cut to join QPR, with a reunion with Harry Redknapp on the cards after the former Spurs boss gave him his debut at West Ham in 1996. Reports emerged in June regarding Ferdinand’s impending move to QPR and it has now gathered pace.

Ferdinand is currently working for the BBC covering the World Cup, but is set to sign when he comes back according to the QPR manager.

Redknapp told Telegraph Sport: “Rio has agreed to join us and we’re hopeful of getting that one over the line when he gets back from the World Cup.

“I can’t foresee any problems with it and we’d be delighted if we can get it done soon. He’s been a player at the top of the list since he left Manchester United and he would give the whole place a lift with his quality and experience.”

Another target on Redknapp’s defensive wish list is Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker. The colossal figure was relegated with his side this year and after his eye-catching performances, QPR are keen to bring in the Englishman.

Ferdinand won 9/14 tackles in the Premier League for Manchester United last season.
