Robbie Fowler: Robin van Persie could leave Manchester United in summer

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has stated that Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney will be better off now that Robin van Persie is on the sidelines.

Van Persie was injured during United’s 3-0 win over Olympiakos and has not featured for the first-team since. That has meant that Wayne Rooney has moved into the Dutchman’s role as the lone, central striker, allowing Juan Mata to move just behind him where the Englishman used to play.

A lot has been said about Rooney and van Persie’s partnership and how, at times, it looks wrong and disjointed. Well, now that the Dutchman is injured, Rooney has shone, especially at Upton Park where he scored twice.

He also scored twice against Aston Villa in a 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

“When Rooney and RVP were playing together it was a bit of a mix-match,” Fowler said, according to talkSport. “They weren’t getting results.

“Since RVP has been injured and out of the side, Rooney seems to have upped his game.

“I really rate Rooney and think he could play as a lone striker, he can play with anyone. He can play a multitude of roles.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Van Persie left in the summer.”

Wayne Rooney has scored 15 Premier League goals this season – the most at United.
