Netherlands captain Robin van Persie is likely to miss Oranje‘s semi-final clash against Argentina with a stomach problem, writes FIFA.com.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal confirmed that the Manchester United striker trained alone on Tuesday because of the stomach issue and is consequently a doubt for Thursday’s crucial tie.

“He has a stomach problem, an intestinal problem. I don’t know (if he will play),” Van Gaal told a press conference.

“I will decide (on Wednesday). Van Persie is our captain so he is very important to us. In principle my captain always plays, but he has to be fit.”

While Robin van Persie’s ailments are a real concern for the Dutch boss, there was some positive news on the injury front with Ron Vlaar, Nigel de Jong and Leyor Fer returning to training. De Jong wasn’t expected to play any further part in the World Cup having sustained a groin injury during Netherlands win over Mexico.

“If his reaction is good and he can play, then the miracle can come true,” Van Gaal said.

Van Persie has been instrumental in Netherlands’ passage through to the semi-finals, netting three goals in their opening two group fixtures.
