Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed that striker Robin van Persie won’t be available for the match on Sunday against rivals Manchester City. Despite not featuring for the Red Devils since mid-February, it was expected that Van Persie would have been fit for the derby.

The 31-year-old injured his ankle in a 2-1 defeat against Swansea on February 21 and hasn’t featured for Van Gaal’s side since.

The forward had earlier tweeted saying he expected to be fit for the match:

But, in his pre-match press conference, Louis van Gaal has confirmed that they will be without the former Arsenal striker for City’s visit to Old Trafford.

On being asked if Robin van Persie would be fit, the manager said, “No. He's back in training sessions so that is a plus. He trained two days with us and, today, he had recovery. So I think that is not enough to play.”

However, the former Barcelona manager had positive news considering his defence.

He revealed, “We have to wait and see always [on Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw]. I don't think Shaw [will play] but I do think Smalling can play.”

When asked if Angel Di Maria would make a return to the starting XI, Van Gaal admitted, “Not only Angel Di Maria [is pushing for a place], but every player who is training in the first squad are pushing because they want to do their utmost.”

Wayne Rooney is expected to continue in the striker’s role in the Dutchman’s absence. The Englishman has relished leading the line having scored thrice in his last four games despite missing a penalty at Anfield.

Manchester United are currently third in the Premier League table on 62 points, 1 behind their weekend opponents. The Manchester derby kicks off at 8.30 pm on Sunday, 12th April.
