Rumour: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich to ditch Diego Costa pursuit for Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani

Edinson Cavani has proved himself to be on of European football’s premier goal getters in recent years

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to make Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani the club’s marquee signing this summer, not Atletico Madrid’s Diego Costa, report the Express.

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for the Brazilian born Spaniard throughout the campaign, with a transfer at the end of the season widely expected to take place with Jose Mourinho keen to bolster his front line.

The Portuguese has made no secret of his desire to bring in a forward capable of providing the cutting edge to the west Londoners’ attack this season but could now clash with the club’s owner over their proposed transfer targets.

Meanwhile, Spanish journalist Diego Torres Romano has suggested that following talks with agent Jorge Mendes, the Russian billionaire has intimated that he wants to sign the Uruguayan forward from PSG.

However, although Abramovich may prefer Cavani, whether he is willing to challenge Mourinho’s judgement in the transfer market remains to be seen as Chelsea’s next move in regards to their front line will have a huge bearing on whether they can challenge for silverware next season.

Cavani, who has recently been linked with Manchester United, is reportedly frustrated with the Ligue 1 giants after being forced to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and would almost certainly be available at a cheaper price than Costa.

However, Atleti’s talisman is one of Europe’s in form players and the capture of his signature would send out a clear message to Chelsea’s rivals.
