Rumour: Diego Simeone top contender to replace Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City

Diego Simeone is currently one of the most sought-after football coaches in Europe

Manchester City will consider replacing Manuel Pellegrini at the end of the current campaign if they continue their disappointing form till the end of the season. According to Dailystar, the Manchester City board are looking at the possibility of hiring current Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone should they decide to part ways with Pellegrini.

It was earlier revealed that the Chilean’s job is under no immediate threat as he received the backing of the board. That being said, the former Malaga boss has time until the end of the season to turn things around else there is always a possibility that he’ll get the boot.

Previous manager Roberto Mancini was sacked after a trophyless 2012-2013 season despite having led City to their first trophy in 35 years. His team followed the FA Cup triumph with a League title but failed to win a single trophy in the season after.

Mancini was a firm fan favourite at the club, so his sacking is an indication that Owner Sheikh Mansour and Chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak are not afraid to get rid of the manager if they feel their employee isn’t delivering.

Diego Simeone a great choice

Atletico Madrid have done an astronomical job of competing with La Liga powerhouses Real Madrid and Barcelona and the main reason why they have done so is Simeone. The former Atleti player has operated at the club with a paper-thin budget.

Atletico’s team principle is good to watch as well, which will impress the Manchester City fans instantly if implemented at the Etihad.

Pellegrini and Simeone have had contrasting campaigns this season as Simeone’s team have impressed despite losing a plethora of star players while Pellegrini’s team have been completely different from last year’s title winning side.
