Everton are to make a shock £6 million bid for a player some consider to have been made a scapegoat for Manchester United’s disappointing season, Tom Cleverley, according to the Metro.

Cleverley has struggled this season and has been seen by many supporters as not good enough for the club. He has been blamed for most defeats and his performances slated by supporters of the club and the media.

The Englishman needs a new start and Everton could be just that. His former manager David Moyes put faith in him and he could be set to move to the Scot’s old club, who inflicted defeat on him in his final game as Manchester United manager.

Moyes was sacked yesterday after a poor season that has seen United fall from reigning champions to seventh place. They have missed out on Champions League qualification and could miss out on European football altogether.

The relationship between Everton and Man Utd is not what it used to be following fraught transfer negotiations last summer, during which Moyes submitted disrespectful bids and said some poorly chosen words in the press about what Everton should do with Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines.

However, despite Cleverley’s poor form and huge criticism, Everton would reportedly like to bring him to Goodison Park. Apparently Man Utd would like to keep hold of Cleverley as he is a youth product from the club’s academy.

Everton are also thought to be interested in bringing United full-back Alexander Buttner to Goodison but that is still rumour.

Cleverley has created just 10 chances in 21 matches this season.
