Rumour: Liverpool to pursue move for Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall

Cardiff City keeper David Marshall

If Cardiff fail to stay up this season, Liverpool will pursue goalkeeper David Marshall, writes the Metro.

The Liverpool hierarchy would be willing to sanction a £6 million to secure the Scot’s services, as they plan for a title charge next season.

Marshall has been one of Cardiff’s few players who have stood out at Premier League level since their promotion to English football’s top tier, consistently turning in authoritative displays.

Cardiff currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League, two points adrift of Norwich in 17th, and look destined to make the drop.

Trips to Sunderland and Newcastle await The Bluebirds in their next two fixtures, followed by an exceedingly tricky home tie against title-chasers Chelsea.

Marshall would have to play back-up to Belgian shot-stopper Simon Mignolet, with the pay-off being an increased wage and the opportunity to stay in the Premier League.

Liverpool will be fighting on four fronts next season (league, domestic cups and the Champions League) so will need to be able to rotate their squad, including the keeper on occasion.

Brad Jones is Liverpool’s current second-string keeper and has featured in only three cup games this season.
