Liverpool are said to be exploring the possibilty of re-signing Xabi Alonso this January transfer window in a bargain deal.

The Spanish international played at Merseyside for the best part of five years, racking up 143 appearances, firmly establishing himself as a Kop favorite. However, in 2009, the 32-year old sealed a £30 million dream switch to Real Madrid, in search of silverware.

The midfielder will now be out of contract this summer, after failing to extend his contract at the Bernebeu.

Manchester United, who were linked with the player strongly, have now pulled out of the race according to the daily star. However, the likes of Chelsea – who have apparently been offered the playmaker by Real Madrid and Manchester City are hot in his pursuit and will look to pip their rivals Liverpool to his signature.

An emotional return to Anfield might well be on, however, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool manage to match the massive wage demands of £140,ooo a week, soon after smashing their wage structure to secure the Uruguayan Luis Suarez.
