As we await the announcement that Louis van Gaal is indeed Manchester United’s new manager, he has dropped the biggest hint that he is ready to hand Robin van Persie the captains armband next season, rather than Wayne Rooney.

Robin van Persie scored a fantastic volley in a 1-1 draw with Ecuador in a friendly on Saturday and speaking after the game, Louis van Gaal said:

“He plays very well. Now he is coming from a bad injury and he scores a fantastic goal – unbelievable – and he was pressing, so I was happy with him, but he is also a good captain.

“Always, you make a player captain when you have more or less the same philosophy, not only about football tactics but also about life. So I think that’s very important.

“I believe that Van Persie and Van Gaal [have] the same philosophy.”

The official Louis van Gaal announcement is set to go live mid-morning on Monday. When asked by journalists what his plans were for the next few days, he answered: “I can fill them in how I want, I don’t ask you how your next days look, and I don’t want to know either.”
