Rumour: Manchester United and Liverpool both interested in signing Alexandre Song from Barcelona

Alex Song interesting both Manchester United and Liverpool?

Manchester United have made a shock move for former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song.

It is quite clear that Man United need a new midfield and their manager, David Moyes, was clearly on the lookout for quality additions last summer. His pursuits of Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera did not work out how he’d have liked but he did acquire Marouane Fellaini from his former club, Everton.

Many believe that Fellaini was overpriced, though, and that price-tag has affected his performances as the Belgian looks nowhere near the £27 million paid for him by Moyes, who previously paid £15m for the tall Belgian, bringing him from Standard Liege to Goodison Park.

It is believed that Song has been identified as a midfield addition Moyes would like to make, according to Goal, and could cost them around £12.5 million. He was bought for £15m and it is thought that Barcelona are looking to recapture much of that fee in return. The potential deal may be further complicated by rival interest from Liverpool, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Song left Arsenal in 2012 but has struggled to make any sort of impact at Barcelona and is consistently sat on the substitutes bench for the Catalan giants.

He is set to leave Spain in the summer with a Premier League return highly likely and Man United a possible destination with a large overhaul of players set to take place over the summer.
