Rumour: Real Madrid plotting shock move for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy in January

Jamie Vardy is currently the Premier League’s highest goalscorer this season

Spanish giants Real Madrid are believed to be plotting a shock move for Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy during the January transfer window, according to Eurosport. Los Blancos are looking to bring in competition for striker Karim Benzema and Vardy could be the right fit.

It has been quite the fairytale start to Leicester City’s season who are currently sitting fifth in the Premier League table with five wins so far. Much of this achievement has got to do with the sublime form of their high-flying English striker Vardy who has been sensational right from the start of the campaign.

The 28-year-old was playing non-league football with Fleetwood Town three years ago and the transformation of the player has been tremendous ever since. His incredible goal tally of 10 goals in 10 games has grabbed the attention of the 10 time European Champions who are looking to make a shocking move for the Sheffield native. Last season, he managed to find the back of the net on only five occasions despite making 35 league appearances.

This season, the England international has maintained a good record of netting at least once in his last seven consecutive matches for Leicester. It is no surprise that his newfound level of recognition has attracted the interests from Europe’s elite clubs, including Madrid.

Vardy’s rise has been tremendous considering he developed his game in the lower leagues. If this move does somehow materialise it will undoubtedly be one of English football’s true fairytales. Vardy could well be lining up alongside star-studded players including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu in January.

Los Blancos are deploying Ronaldo in the central role due to the absence of Benzema, who is sidelined with injury. Club manager Rafa Benitez is reportedly keen on acquiring the services of Vardy, who has been “one of the revelations of the season”. It’s no surprise the Spanish coach is in need of another out-and-out centre-forward ever since Gonzalo Higuain departed the club in 2013.

Tottenham Hotspur also interested in signing Vardy

However, another Premier League club is also on the lookout for his signature. Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly lining up a £15-million move for the Leicester striker and, in truth, this move seems far more likely to happen.

During the summer, Spurs were interested in landing West Brom’s Saido Berahino at White Hart Lane. Unfortunately, the deal did not materialise and reports have suggested the club are no longer interested in signing the Baggies striker.
