According to reports from the Sun, Louis van Gaal may be offered the role of Director of Football at his current club Manchester United. This move would enable Jose Mourinho to take up the position of manager of the English club from the 2016-17 season. The club are desperate to get back to the top of English football after having a few bad seasons, which have seen them miss out on Champions League twice in three years.

United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward wants to pair up the two as he believes keeping a person of Van Gaal’s experience and vast footballing knowledge would be beneficial for the club. He remains popular with the executive vice-chairman despite having a tumultuous season in which they were knocked out of the Champions League group stages which relegated them to the Europa League round of 16, where they were knocked out by eventual runners-up Liverpool.

However, they are favourites to win the FA cup final against Crystal Palace.

The former Porto boss had a tough season at Chelsea, where he was relieved of his duties in December after the Blues lost to eventual Premier League champions Leicester City. In contrast, he won the Premier League last season with relative ease when Chelsea were top of the season from day one.

Mourinho was linked to Man Utd previously when legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson announced his retirement. Mourinho instead went to his old club Chelsea, where he had won two Premier League titles and on the other hand, United hired David Moyes as manager.

Moyes was sacked before the end of the season which led to Ryan Giggs being appointed as interim player-manager. After their dismal season, then Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was hired in hopes that he would deliver Premier League and Champions League glory to the club.

Reportedly, Mourinho has been in regular contact with Ed Woodward ever since his departure from the London club, though a concrete offer is yet to be put on the table. Mourinho has had a lot of offers from various teams but hasn’t made a decision yet, as he is waiting for the Old Trafford club to come calling.

Van Gaal and Mourinho have worked together before and are believed to be good friends. When LVG was a manager at Barcelona, Mourinho was the Dutchman’s assistant. Van Gaal also let Mourinho take charge of his team for certain trophies, where Van Gaal would act as his assistant.

Thus, it is safe to say that the two coaches share a very healthy working relationship, which would help United get back to their feet. The fans want the club to hire Jose Mourinho as soon as possible to take the club back to its glory days.
