I-League: Salgaocar thrash host Shillong Lajong 3-1

Salgaocar win away from home in Shillong

Saturday 25th April 2015: Shillong Lajong FC went down by a scoreline of 1-3 to the visiting Salgaocar FC as The Reds lose their first match of their 7 home game run of fixtures. The Greens however would only find their second win in six games.

Lajong began brightly as they pushed on forward but the lead was taken by the visitors instead from a rare circumstance. After winning a free kick at the centre, Augustin Fernandes takes it quick with good vision to find the hands of Rehenesh TP only after the ball had crossed the line by a few inches. The linesman gave the goal in the 8th minute and Salgaocar FC were up a goal to nil.

Lajong pressed hard again trying to find the equaliser only for the lead to double Salgaocar’s way as they scored again against the run of play in the 22nd minute. This time Bikash Jairu settles in a long ball to find himself one on one with Lajong defender Minchol Son as he sprints pass the North Korean and the advancing Rehesh TP to slide the ball into the empty net.

Salgaocar then sat back and invited pressure from the home side. With just a few minutes before halftime Douhou Pierre however is freed inside the box from a lobbed pass over the Lajong defense and chips over the Lajong custodian to make it 0-3 for the visitors going into the break at half time.

Thangboi Singto would have easily influenced his players in the dressing room as the hosts dictated play during the second half. Lajong went firing on all cylinders with one attack after the other and eventually found the back of the net in the 66th minute through Brazilian striker Uilliams Bomfin. Glen controlled the ball inside the box surrounded by three defenders as he taps it back for Uilliams to strike. The home support were on their feet as they tried to inspire their side to find a few goals back and reduce the deficit. Thangboi Singto made two changes by bringing in Rupert Nongrum for Boithang in the 78th minute and Jacob for Milan Singh in the 90th minute.

The Reds however could not find their ways back again as the game ended with the scores at 1-3 giving the visitors their first win after a 4 game losing streak. The lost takes Lajong to 9th position with 13 points from 14 games and Salgaocar climb up the table to 6th with 17 points from 15 games.
