Sergio Busquets to sign new contract to extend stay at Barcelona

Sergio Busquets extends his contract with Barcelona.

Sergio Busquets is set to sign a new contract for La Liga giants Barcelona. The contract will see the Spaniard extend his time at Barcelona to 2019. A statement on the club’s website read "FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with Sergio Busquets to renew his contract through June 30, 2019 with an option for one more year."

The central defensive midfielder whose contract was set to expire by 2018, has gained the attention of several teams from the Premier League, including Manchester City. The new contract from Barcelona was most likely handed to ward off interest from outside.

I’d like to experience Premier League one day: Busquets

The 26-year old World Cup winner had told The Guardian that he would love to play in the Premier League before the end of his career. When asked on what he liked about the Premier League, he said, "I envy everything. I admire the Premier League for the quality and style of football.

"Maybe after years playing the same style you tire of it, and football there is very different. Stadiums are full, pitches are good, the press is different, people are different, the football culture is different.

"Everyone talks highly of England and I'd like to experience it one day. You see more space, more opportunity to enjoy your football. It's more physical, more intense, but I think I'd be comfortable.

"I can't say I'll definitely play there because things change and I've always said I want to stay here for many years, but I'd like the experience."
