Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp revealed that ex-Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he had failed to make the best use of Shinji Kagawa at Old Trafford.

The Japanese playmaker moved to United in 2012 after winning back-to-back titles with Dortmund for a deal worth about £12m. The midfielder was highly rated after he scored 21 goals in two seasons for the Bundesliga club before making the move.

But the midfielder made only 57 appearances for the Red Devils in two seasons, scoring just six goals – half of which came in a game against Norwich City.

Sir Alex was sad it didn’t work with Kagawa: Klopp

Both Klopp and Ferguson met in Nyon at the UEFA coaching forum and the Scottish manager admitted to Klopp that it was a “shame” that Kagawa didn’t work out for United.

Klopp said: “I met Sir Alex in Nyon and he’s still in love with Shinji. He told me, ‘Shame we didn’t manage this well so that it worked out for him. We were satisfied in the first year’.

“And in the second year you usually make the next step but he didn’t manage to do it. But Sir Alex was saying ‘Shame we should have made this work’.”

Kagawa seems to be enjoying himself back at Dortmund and even scored on his second debut against SC Freiburg.
