It's definitely Pepe. He is one of the reasons why Portugal won the Euros. His presence of mind on the field is something which cannot be described. I say this because he was outstanding this season. He was even in the best top 10 players in Europe this time, and was the only defender on the list. His skills, pace and determination are just indescribable.
Everyone is commenting about Ramos, Boateng, Mascherano and Pique - yeah they are really good, but this year Pepe totally stole the show and proved to everyone that he is currently the best centre-back in the world.

If you look at the best 'defensive' player, then I guess Silva and Godin are amazing. But if you want an overall player who plays as a centre-back, it has to be Ramos. He defends really well. He is an amazing captain who can control the team well and when it comes to scoring important goals, he needs no introduction. Champions league finals, semi-finals, super cup finals, he has scored everywhere. So as to the most important defender, it's Sergio Ramos.
