Madrid, Oct 7 (IANS) The Spanish media on Friday praised the country's magnificent first hour in the game against Italy in the 2018 World Cup football qualifier match, but pointed that it was eventually robbed of victory by the comeback of the Azzurri, ending the match in a 1-1 draw.

"Italy escaped us alive," said the daily AS, noting that La Roja played in a great way for an hour but did not get the result it deserves on Thursday.

Marca put a photo of Victor Machin 'Vitolo', scorer of Spain's only goal, and said that the Spanish team's lesson in football went unrewarded.

"Vendetta incomplete," said Mundo Deportivo, referring to the Spain's desire to get back at Italy for the loss against it in the 2016 European Championship knockout stage.

The newspaper blamed the missed opportunity on Sergio Ramos, whose fault led to Italy's game-tying penalty, reports Efe.

Sport newspaper praised the performance of the Spanish squad and noted its great performance which did not end with victory.
