Daniel Nadales climbs up the goalpost to defend a corner

We’ve all seen how teams defend corners and set-pieces. Some of them employ man-to-man marking while others like use zonal marking on set-pieces.

Spanish third division defender Daniel Nadales showed a completely new way of defending corners, as he climbed up the goalpost. Nadales, who captains CD Cuartes, has been making headlines across the world for his method and was lucky that the referee didn’t spot it.

When asked as to why he did it, he mentioned that it wasn’t pre-meditated and was something he decided to do in the spur of the moment. He said, “It was a corner. We were defending and the attacking team were very tall. The only way I could think to jump higher was to grab the post.”

“It was spontaneous. I did not repeat it in the match. Afterward, I read the rules and now I know they can punish you for doing that. My teammates have taken it very well but they say I was crazy (to try it).”

His defending though didn’t really help his team change the outcome of the game, as Cuartes lost 3-1 to CD Teruel.

Taking the assistance of the woodwork is something that is banned in the laws of the game, and this incident brought back memories of when Martin Palermo hung on to the crossbar to score for Boca Juniors against River Plate back in 2008.
