TAL Season 3 (Division 1): Gameweek 6 Review

Pavan Powar of Flipkart FC with an acrobatic attempt on goal.

Upsets ruled the day as Supernova beat Horizons to grab second place while Mercurial avenged last season’s thumping at the hands of Gremio by completing a come from behind win with only 10 men.

Parikrma scraped through with a late goal ensuring all three points, keeping their perfect record intact. Flipkart and Kougen Kikou picked up wins while in-form teams Project 7 and Samba played out a draw.

Samba FC 1 – 1 Project 7

Defence and attack shared equal spoils as Samba and Project 7 played out a 1-1 draw. Samba, who possess the meanest defence in the division took the lead through Sufiyan Ahmed but were immediately pegged back when Rahul Singh brought Project 7 on equal terms in the following minute.

Samba have been outstanding in defence and with their attack slowly panning out, they will be a threat to all teams in the second half of the season. Project 7 were missing key players in the game, but their resilience saw them come away with a point.

Scorers:

Sufiyan Ahmed 31’ (Samba FC)

Rahul Singh 32’ (Project 7)

FC Kougen Kikou 1 – 0 Yataghan Internazionale

FCKK picked up their first win of the season when second half substitute Kei Tsuji scored the winner in a tightly contested game. The game was scrappy at times with both teams struggling to make coherent plays.

Both teams were missing important players but with relegation looming for FCKK, they seemed to want the win more. Yataghan will look to bolster their attack in the winter break as they continue their resurgence into the upper echelons of the division. FCKK need to build on this result and string together a couple of wins if they are to truly get themselves out of the relegation battle.

Scorers:

Kei Tsuji 47’ (FC Kougen Kikou)

Gremio FC 1 – 2 Mercurial FC

Mercurial picked up their first win of the season against long time tormenters Gremio, in quite some fashion as they did it with 10 men. Sandesh Somanna gave an early lead to Gremio and flashbacks of the 16-0 game were coming to mind, but Mercurial quickly reorganized and went on to score an equalizer through Jaipal Pai just before half time.

With Gremio pushing for a winner, it seemed likely they would get one but Mercurial ended up with all three points when a mistake in the Gremio defence saw Haider Aly-Reza through on goal for an easy finish. Gremio now join the relegation battle that looks likely to play out till the final day.

Scorers:

Sandesh Somanna 2’ (Gremio FC)

Jaipal Pai 29’; Haider Aly-Reza 41’ (Mercurial FC)

Rare Dare FC 1 – 2 Parikrma

Rare Dare FC put on a spirited fight against league leaders Parikrma but couldn’t pick up any points at the end. A flurry of late goals saw the game come to life beginning with top scorer Chiranjeevi M putting Parikrma into the lead.

RDFC responded well and got back on level terms when Nova found the back of the net but Parikrma instantly found a response with Santosh John finding the eventual winner.

Parikrma have won close games over the past few weeks, but the resilience shown is indicative of a championship team. RDFC need to pick up a few results soon or will definitely be odds on for relegation.

Scorers:

Nova R 56’ (Rare Dare FC)

Chiranjeevi M 43’; Santosh John 58’ (Parikrma)

Horizons FC 2 – 3 Supernova FC

The clash of the titans saw Supernova win a thrilling encounter against favourites Horizons. This win for Supernova means the title race is now a three-horse race, with the title likely to go down to the wire.

Horizons took the lead when Saarang Ganapathi’s perfectly timed chip found the back of the net. Supernova responded well to the goal and got themselves back on level terms via a Floyd Fernandes goal.

Supernova added two goals in the first ten minutes after the break to give themselves some comfort, but a late goal from Horizons ensured a thrilling finish to the game.

Supernova now overtake Horizons in the standings albeit only on goal difference, with both teams 3 points behind Parikrma.

Scorers:

Saarang Ganapathi 17’; Barry Anand 59’ (Horizons FC)

Floyd Fernandes 22’; Nitin Baros 32’; Micay Levy 41’ (Supernova FC)

Flipkart FC 2 – 0 Mavericks FC

Flipkart beat Mavericks in the final game of the day courtesy a brace from captain Pavan Powar. Flipkart were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute which Pavan Powar hit straight at the keeper but got a lucky rebound to put the ball into the back of the net.

Mavericks had a few half chances, which they failed to convert, and a goal right after the break ensured Flipkart secured all three points. Mavericks now find themselves struggling to get out of the relegation battle and need a couple of wins if they are to survive this season.

A top three position looks out of reach for Flipkart but with 4th spot still up for grabs, Flipkart will be rearing to turn up the gears.

Scorers:

Pavan Powar 14’, 32’ (Flipkart FC)
