The Kolkata derby in pictures

The traditional heavyweights of Kolkata football faced off against each for the first time this season in the Calcutta football league. Their form heading into the fixture couldn’t have been more different. I-League champions Mohun Bagan have all but relinquished their chances of lifting the regional trophy this season, after getting demolished by four goals to nil.

On the other hand, East Bengal have secured their sixth consecutive CFL trophy with the win as they now have an unassailable seven-point lead at the top of the table. New South Korean recruit Do Dong proved to be the difference in the first half, scoring a free-kick brace.

Mohun Bagan’s defence couldn’t control the 21-year old’s swift movement as he stomped his authority on a one-sided game. However, the match was marred with controversy, after Bagan striker Dudu was given his marching orders on the 50-minute mark.

Two more goals from Mohammed Rafique and Rahul Bheke added the final nail on Mohun Bagan’s coffin. It’s back to the drawing board for Sanjoy Sen and the Mariners, who have scored just 12 goals, as compared to East Bengal’s 27.
