Think before you tweet!

Arsenal v Chelsea - Premier League

We are all allowed our eccentricities on our off days. International footballers even more so.

In the world of Social Media, a faux pas doesn’t die down so easy, especially if you have a loyal brigade which, ironically, is ready to troll you right to the wall of shame. Privacy is an urban legend and announcements once hollered cannot be rolled back.

Young Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand felt the wrath of Twitter quite recently. He decided that his actions were so unwarranted that the safest thing he could do was to embrace oblivion. In light of Ryan’s withdrawal from the England squad, he decided to make a rather aggressive tweet which was along the tune:

“To clarify, it’s not a sore throat – I’m ill. Do you think a sore throat could stop me being a part of a match?”

If you’re wondering where the social blunder comes into play, we deleted the expletive Ryan so generously spiced the issue with. He probably realized that his fan following isn’t so forgiving and immediately issued an apology; in fact he went one step further and deleted his Twitter account. It’s only PG-13 information for us from now on!

Ryan was diagnosed with a viral infection which made him sit out for the qualifier against San Marino. In quick succession, he will be absent from the match against Poland in Warsaw. Nobody likes a time out and consequently, Ryan spewed some venom on the social networking site. He rationalizes his behavior by saying that he didn’t appreciate the fact that people believed that he was sitting out just because of a sore throat.

However, we hate being so hard on him, he did make an apology

“Sorry if I offended anyone by swearing as I don’t encourage that type of language.”

Well, if he really doesn’t appreciate that kind of language, maybe his nephew did it. Just saying.

As a matter of trivial pursuit, Bertrand isn’t the first Chelsea or even, English player to have jumped the gun on social media. The infamous Ashley Cole had a lot to say about John Terry’s clash against Anton Ferdinand. The Twitterati were up in arms and demanded an apology and that’s exactly what they got! Now we know, you can be an icon, you can mess with the mafia but you can’t mess with a mob. Especially one armed with a blue interface and a perky little birdie.
