From title contenders to top four hopefuls

We saw some surprising results last weekend including three big away wins. Tottenham took full advantage of a slip by Leicester City while Manchester City made a big statement in a bid to finish in top 3 as Sergio Aguero struck a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge to help the Citizens to a 3-0 win.

A Marcus Rashford goal at Old Trafford ensured what was inevitable, Aston Villa have been relegated to the Championship. There were massive wins for Newcastle United and Sunderland in their bid to escape relegation.

Meanwhile Arsenal slipped up yet again and they face a potential threat from Manchester United as they could still lose out on Champions League Football.

So let us look at the top stories from Round 34:

1) Massive wins for Newcastle and Sunderland

Rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland recorded important 3-0 wins. This was Rafa Benitez's first victory and it came at the expense of a Swansea side fresh from their own win over Chelsea at the Liberty Stadium the previous weekend.

The Premier League is so unpredictable that one night you're winning over the reigning champions and the following fortnight, you're losing to a team that could be playing in the Championship come August.

Sunderland did both themselves and Newcastle a favour by winning 3-0 at Norwich. All these three teams are in the relegation battle and it seems most likely that only one of the three will survive in the Premier League.

And Norwich's slip has ensured that the Tyne and Wear sides are still in with a chance of survival.

2) The demise of Aston Villa

aston villa

Having been involved in the relegation dogfight each time in the past five years, Aston Villa's drop was quite inevitable this season. It had been coming for some time now after they had only narrowly avoided the embarrassment last season.

But it was not long ago that they were competing for honours. They were very much in the title race in January 2009 and they finished 6th on three consecutive occasions under Martin O'Neill.

They have the fifth highest total of major honours won by an English Club, having won the First Division seven times. The Birmingham-based side had even finished runners-up in the inaugural Premier League season (1992-93).

However, a fine goal by the Red Devils put the Villans to the sword and opened their door to the Championship. Villa were caught napping by a quick diagonal pass by the returning Wayne Rooney and Antonio Valencia marked his first start in over 5 months with an assist as Rashford found the back of the net.

Notably, this was the first time that Rooney and Rashford were playing together.

3. Every point matters!

leicester city

Jamie Vardy could potentially miss the Foxes' trip to Old Trafford on 1st May after he was charged with improper conduct following his reaction to the red card he received against West Ham United on Sunday. His sending off almost cost Leicester City the game as they needed a last gasp penalty by Ulloa to rescue a point.

While the question of whether it was a case of two points dropped or one gained is debatable, but it was nevertheless a point closer towards the title. And every point from now up to the end of the season will matter, especially with Leciester facing tricky fixtures.

4. From title contenders to top four hopefuls

Arsenal were the title favourites on new year's eve and yet they are now fighting to even finish in the top four. They are currently 13 points adrift of Leicester, having dropped 21 points in the Premier League in this calendar year.

They were fighting on all fronts and what has followed since is actually a familiar story for any Arsenal fan. And this time, they might even lose out on a Champions League spot as United are only 4 points behind them. Although Gunners play against each of the bottom three placed teams in their last 5 games, a tricky trip to the Etihad Stadium still awaits them.

Arsene Wenger needs to sort things out quickly as they have won only twice in their last seven Premier League outings.

5. Spurred by Kane and Alli

tottenham hotspur

Tottenham Hotspurs followed their impressive 3-0 win over Manchester United with a brilliant display at the Britannia Stadium. Stoke City were routed 4-0 as both Dele Alli and Harry Kane scored twice.

Having played some outstanding football throughout the season, Tottenham have scored the most goals and at the same time conceded the least. And they took full advantage of a slip by Leicester to cut their lead to 5 points.

Tottenham will hope to continue to do the same as Leicester face Manchester United, Everton and Chelsea in their last three matches. Is there one last twist in the title race? Only time will tell.
