Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood allegedly turned down the chance to sign Liverpool superstar Luis Suarez when on a scouting trip.

While Suarez was still at Ajax in Holland, Sherwood was sent on a scouting trip to watch the Uruguayan and spurned the opportunity to bring him to Spurs.

The Reds signed him in January 2011 and he has grown into one of the best players in the world. He currently has 28 goals in the Premier League this season and leads the scoring charts by some distance.

“They came to watch him,” said Ruud Gullit.

“I met Sherwood together with Les Ferdinand, they were Harry Redknapp’s assistants at the time and were also his scouts.

“They asked me all kinds of questions about Suarez, so I just point blank said: “You have to snap him up, without any hesitation, in a heartbeat.”

““Well, we’re not sure,” they said whilst they actually watched him play.

“That’s a huge mistake, if you ask me. Afterwards they said to me: “Well, we might have got it wrong.””

Sherwood will be hoping his decision does not come back to bite him at Anfield on Sunday.

Suarez has scored 66 goals in his first 102 Premier League games for Liverpool, a better record than Fernando Torres.
