Truth behind Chelsea's alleged 150 million Euro bid for Lionel Messi

Messi and Mourinho
Barcelona’s Lionel Messi doesn’t really share a great friendship with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho who managed Real Madrid for three seasons.

It is being reported all over England and Spain that Chelsea had made an audacious €150m offer for Lionel Messi last May, a move that failed without any doubt.

Catalan daily channel TV3 Efectivament has claimed that the Blues made an offer for the Argentine following an interest from Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. Mourinho is said to have been personally suggesting owner Roman Abramovich to back the signing.

According to the show, Chelsea were constantly monitoring the prolonged speculation surrounding Messi’s contract status at the club last season before he signed a contract that will keep him at the club until 2018.

Another reason mentioned in the report states that Messi is considering his stay in the country, especially following Cesc Fabregas’ move to London this summer. It is worth noting that Messi’s girlfriend, Antonella Rocuzzo and Cesc’ fiance Daniela Seeman are known to be very close friends.

The offer was subsequently rejected by both Messi and the club who were less than interested in the lump sum of money.

Truth behind it?

A story that was kept in the dark for four months, how does it help either of the two parties involved, especially since a story like this could have created havoc during the summer transfer window.

Moreover, Mourinho is known to be a manager who is very selective about his players of choice. During his days at Real Madrid, he was, in simple words, not very affectionate of Messi, constantly criticizing him in front of the media. It is highly unlikely that Mourinho would actually persuade Abramovich to sign Messi.

And, on top of that, Messi has a buy-out clause of €250m, and an offer that is €100m shy of the player’s value is bound to be turned down.
