Manchester United’s Portuguese international Nani is set to join Fenerbahce after the Turkish club announced on their official Twitter account that they had approached the player and the club over a proposed move. Fenerbahce are looking to bolster their squad after narrowly missing out on the league title to fierce rivals Galatasaray.

They have been active in the transfer window with three confirmed signings already – defenders Simon Kjaer, Abdoulaye Ba and Sener Ozbayrakli as well as forward Fernandao. The 18-time Super Lig champions now look set to add the pacy winger to their midfield ranks.

His impressive performances during his spell in Portugal had reignited hopes that the winger could still have a future at Old Trafford. Nani himself had talked of his love for United and indicated he would like to return to the club.

“I love Manchester United. I love the club. The only decision I made to go away was to play more and be me again because I lost a lot of things there last season, because of injuries and the change of the manager. The new manager didn't know me well and a lot of things changed. I needed to play regularly to be happy,” he had said in February.

However, the move to Fenerbahce looks certain after they further tweeted that the player is set for a medical.

Nani’s fall from stardom at United

Nani moved to Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2007 and tasted Champions League success in his first season itself. It was Cristiano Ronaldo’s move away from Old Trafford however that paved the way for the winger to come to his own.

He has won four Premier League winners’ medals and collected the club’s Player of the Year award for the 2010/11 season. He continued to dazzle the crowd with his plethora of tricks and long-range strikes in the following season as well. In spite of being injured for the majority of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last year in charge at United, Nani was handed a new five-year-deal by new manager David Moyes in September 2013.

Nani, however, continued to be troubled by injuries and his cause was not helped by a number of inconsistent performances when given the chance. Following a summer of upheaval at Old Trafford, Nani found himself down the pecking order, especially after the arrival of Angel Di Maria.

He was loaned out to his previous club for the 2014/15 season, with the winger stating, that he had opted for a temporary move away from Old Trafford in order to gain confidence after a couple of underwhelming seasons at United.

Nani’s performances have however failed to catch the attention of Dutch boss Van Gaal.
