Bruno Alves red card high boot tackle Harry Kane England Portugal
Bruno Alves was sent off for this dangerous tackle

England played Portugal in a friendly match at Wembley on Thursday night ahead of their Euro 2016 campaign. The Three Lions managed to win 1-0 thanks to a Chris Smalling goal in the 86th minute but it wasn’t the most memorable moment of the match. One other incident stood out and became a major talking point – Bruno Alves getting a straight red card in the first half.

The Portuguese centre-back was going for a 50-50 ball with Harry Kane when he did the unthinkable. While the Englishman looked to head the ball, Alves came flying in with a high boot that would make the likes of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris proud.

The defender’s boot grazed Kane’s head but it was enough to scare the living daylights out of the Tottenham Hotspur striker who heaved a sigh of relief when he realized his head was still intact. The referee did not hesitate in pulling out a red card and Alves was soon forced to walk down the tunnel for an early bath.

Of course, the red card saw Twitter users go wild – first at the audacity of the foul and then the silliness of it all. Here are some of the best tweets that went viral on Twitter soon after the red card.
