UEFA opens disciplinary actions against three teams for crowd trouble in Champions League matches

Crowded : Arsenal FC v Galatasaray S.K. - UEFA Champions League

UEFA has charged Borussia Dortmund, Galatasaray and Basel for fan trouble, following their respective fixtures on Thursday.

The Guardian reported that the games had been witness to a lot of crowd disturbances, that came under UEFA’s scanner. At the Emirates stadium, in a group D encounter against Galatasaray, the play was disrupted by the 3000-strong travelling fans towards the end of the first half.

A battery was thrown at the assistant referee near Basel's goal in their home 1-0 win against Liverpool. Borussia Dortmund was charged for unruly behaviour and throwing of fireworks by their travelling fans at Anderlecht’s home ground in Brussels.

UEFA told that the disciplinary proceedings were for crowd disturbances, hurling of fireworks and objects at the Champions League fixtures.

Teams responsible for crowd behaviour

UEFA believes that it is the home side’s duty to inspect the supporters of any anti-social objects before fans enter the stadium.

In the wake of the unrest in the north London match, the Metropolitan Police has already made six arrests, in which two people are reported to have entered the stadium with flares.

Arsenal has been charged of "insufficient organization".

Dortmund and Galatasaray also face actions by UEFA for crowd trouble and fireworks in their matches. Basel is charged for their fans behaviour, who hurled objects at the Swiss team’s home win against Liverpool.

FC Basel is already facing a two-year probation for having crowd disturbances in the Europa League games, last season.

The clubs could face a heavy fine from UEFA and also be ordered to conduct their matches behind closed doors, if they get convicted.
