Chelsea brushed promoted side Burnley aside easily winning 3-1 in their opening match of the 2014-15 season on Monday night with goals from Diego Costa, Andre Schurrle and Branislav Ivanovic but the biggest talking point in the game was not a goal.

It was in the 30th minute of the game when a poor backpass by a Burnley defender send Costa through but as goalkeeper Tom Heaton came out, the striker nudged it past him and went down.

It looked like a clear penalty at first sight and even in the replays, but referee Michael Oliver chose to ignore the appeals and booked Costa for simulation instead.

The decision didn’t affect the outcome of the game though manager Jose Mourinho spoke about the incident at the end of the game.

Chelsea players appeal to Referee Michael Oliver, as he books Diego Costa of Chelsea for diving during the match between Burnley and Chelsea at Turf Moor

The Portuguese manager said: “Costa last season had a fantastic season and in the Spanish league he got five or six yellow cards all year.

We all explained to him what people like and do not like in the Premier League and he presents himself with a fantastic attitude, clean and polite.

He has a clear penalty and yet there is no penalty and a yellow card so I hope he does not get more unfair decisions.

I think Oliver had a good game but the linesman did not support him on this occasion.”
