The Spanish striker made his first start for the Serie A club after signing a two year loan deal. And he marked it with a glancing header against Empoli from the centre of the box that looped into the top left corner of the goal while the goalkeeper stood stranded.
Lorenzo Tonelli and Manuel Pucciarelli had earlier scored for Empoli before Torres scored.
Keisuke Honda then equalised with a drilled shot from outside the box that went into the bottom right corner.
