Frank Lampard scores his first goal for New York City FC

Frank Lampard has finally opened his account and has reintroduced himself to MLS by scoring his first goal for New York City in their 2-0 win over Toronto FC. It has been a long wait for the former Chelsea and England midfielder, who has been hit by a series of injury setbacks and have made only five MLS appearances for his new side.

The 37-year-old scuffed home a shot from eighteen yards to give his side a 20th minute lead at the Yankee Stadium. He will be delighted to have finally got off the mark as he gets used to playing in a new league having arrived to New York City FC with huge reputation in England this summer.

It’s pointless to say the former Chelsea star man is one of England’s best midfielders and he’s the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 211 goals in all competitions. During his time with Chelsea, he has bagged a lot of team and individual honours. He is also the only midfielder to have scored 150 or more goals in the Premier League and is second in the league’s all-time assists table, behind Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs.

The 37-year-old’s achievements both at club and national level football was not overlooked as he ended up being the runner-up in both the FIFA World Player Of The Year and the Ballon d’Or during his prime.

The former England international has contributed so much for the West London outfit and he left Stamford Bridge on a good note having played with them for 13 years. Although he joined Chelsea’s direct rivals Manchester City last season on a season loan spell, he still receives all the love and respect from the Stamford Bridge supporters.

New York City FC’s star striker David Villa was out for the game due to hamstring injury but both their star signings Pirlo and Lampard were available for the game. Toronto midfielder Michael Bradley missed a great opportunity to take a lead from six yeards out. City capitalized their opposition’s miss as Patrick Mullins headed home Andrea Pirlo’s corner on the 77-minute mark to give his side the lead. This was City’s first win in five and are now eight in the Eastern Conference.
