It was one of the most blatant fouls ever committed in European football history, the night when Real Madrid legend Juanito kicked Bayern Münich player Lothar Matthäus right on the face during Real Madrid’s 1987 European Cup semi final tie against Bayern Munich.

The foul was so grave that Juanito had to pay a fine of £5,000, a club record then for the deliberate stamp. The fine was followed by a ban from all of European competition for five years.

Juanito is held up as one of the club’s most iconic legends and his name is still heard around the Bernabeu in the seventh minute of every home game as the Ultras chant “Illa illa illa, Juanito maravilla” following his death in a car accident in 1992.
