Mario Balotelli being held back by the fans

Striker Mario Balotelli had to be held back by the Liverpool fans after involving in a small bust up with Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, during the closing stages of the clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield. Balotelli had already been booked by referee Martin Atkinson and the Reds fans intervened and restrained him from reacting to ensure that he is not sent off like their captain Steven Gerrard.

The frontman reacted to being forced into the advertising boards by Smalling and was quick in his attempts to grab the England international. But, the reds supporters played their part in keeping Balotelli on the pitch by holding on to him near the sideline.

The frontman was booked minutes before this incident for clipping Manchester United defender Phil Jones and if he was given the second yellow card, he would have been the second player for Liverpool to have been sent off. However, neither player were booked for the clash by the referee.
