Video: The physics behind bending a football in the air

Ed Ran

How exactly do players like David Beckham and Roberto Carlos bend a football both ways? More than just a refined technique, they have to rely on physics to move the ball in the air.

In this video, a popular YouTube channel called Physics Girl explains exactly how it happens in simple terms. With the help of a football player, she explains exactly what makes the ball curve in the air.

Depending on which direction you want to curve the ball, you kick it with either the inside or the outside of your foot, imparting a spin that changes the air pressure around the ball, thereby helping it curve in or away.
