Wayne Rooney asked who Martial was says Morgan Schneiderlin

Anthony Martial is set to join United on transfer deadline day

Morgan Schneiderlin has revealed that Wayne Rooney approached him to enquire about Monaco forward Anthony Martial, according to Eurosport. The club captain didn’t seem to know who the new Manchester United signing was until he asked the former Southampton man, as the 19-year-old completes his pending transfer and signs a long-term contract at Old Trafford on transfer deadline day.

Martial was subject to interest from Tottenham earlier in the transfer window, but all suggestions of a move away from Monaco were dismissed when he signed a new contract with the Principality club in June.

Arsenal were also rumoured to be interested in the youngster who has been touted by many in the media as the next Thierry Henry, but Manchester United managed to land their target after he was allowed to leave the French national team training camp to complete his medical and other formalities in England.

New signing Morgan Schneiderlin, who is also training with France, spoke to reporters at the Clairefontaine training base about his conversation with Rooney.

"To be honest, yesterday [Sunday] on the plane, Wayne Rooney came to speak to me and asked me who Martial was, because the English press had started to speak," he said. "I told him he's a great player with great potential, who has played some good matches with Monaco last season and the the beginning of this.

“I told him he is technical and powerful. A little like Therry Henry, even if it's the press who are making that comparison."

Martial set to be become the most expensive teenager

The enormous £36 million fee stumped up by Manchester United for Martial is their third highest transfer fee ever, and also makes him one of the most expensive teenagers in the history of the game. Schneiderlin doesn’t want his fellow Frenchman to think about the huge price-tag when he arrives a Old Trafford, and expects him to score many goals and do well for the club.

"The size of the fee? If he wants my advice, it is to ignore it," he added. "The media will talk a lot and will expect him to score many goals. But he must remember his qualities and play like he knows how. He can't be paralysed by it. I think everything will go well."

While Martial isn’t the most experienced player, he makes up for it with his incredible potential and talent. Having played less than 50 Ligue 1 matches for Monaco since signing for the club in 2013, he has yet to feature for the national team despite being called up.

He is expected to partner Wayne Rooney in attack, or play as the main forward with the Englishman playing the role of an attacking midfielder.
