Wayne Rooney says he never handed in a transfer request at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney scored his 235th goal for Manchester United against Sunderland

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has denied ever handing in a transfer request at Old Trafford, according to Daily Star. The reports hit the press few years ago before the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement about Rooney’s infamous bust-up with the boss.

As the Scots's time at Old Trafford was drawing to a close, Rooney’s own future also looked destined for the United exit door. According to reports, the pair fell out when Rooney was prompted to release a statement questioning the club’ s ambition.

Rumours of a transfer request swirled in 2013, and it was understood that Rooney wanted out of Old Trafford with Chelsea having two bids for the England striker rejected. On one occasion, the Manchester United striker publicly revealed that he wanted to quit United before he changed his mind and signed a new deal.

However, Ferguson suggested that his star player had issued a written request back then, but the man himself has now revealed that it wasn’t the case.

“I went in to see [Sir Alex Ferguson] and I said, 'If you're not going to play me it might be better if I move on'.” Rooney reveals in his upcoming BBC documentary.

“And then all of a sudden it was all over the press that I'd put a transfer request in, which I never did, I don't know what happened, why it panned out that way.”

The United captain’s upcoming documentary by BBC Wayne Rooney – The Man Behind The Goals is set to be out soon. The 29-year-old also scored his 235th goal for the Red Devils during their 3-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday.

Ferguson was the reason I moved to United from Everton: Rooney

Sir Alex signed Rooney from Everton back in 2004

Rooney’s rise in the Premier League started off from his days with boyhood club Everton. At the age of 16, he was already under the spotlight when he let fly the famous arrowed shot into the Arsenal net in a Premier League match.

When the former Evertonian boy decided to leave the club he loved in 2004, he didn’t expect to receive a volatile response from the fans. Both his and Coleen’s family were targetted with abuse as Everton fans were unimpressed by his move to United.

The 29-year-old has admitted that the main reason he chose to swap blue for red was because of Ferguson's influence, which seemed to be too good to turn down.

“He (Sir Alex) was the reason why I wanted to join Manchester United, to work with him. In my eyes, he is the best manager of all time.”

“To work with him was too good to turn down. He's the best manager of all time. When I heard he was interested there was nowhere else I was going to go.” Rooney reveals in his upcoming documentary.
